EMPowerMet \u2013 Electric & Mechanical Power for Metal Manufacturing \u2013 addresses Europe\u2019s dependence on imported titanium, a critical raw material, by developing a fully circular and energy-efficient titanium value chain based entirely on secondary resources.<\/p>
The project will transform titanium swarf and end-of-life components into high-performance semi-finished products using innovative solid-state processing technologies, including Field-Assisted Sintering (FAST) and CONFORM\u2122. These materials will subsequently be processed through rolling, deep drawing, wire-arc Directed Energy Deposition (waDED), and inductive heat treatment to manufacture hybrid titanium components with reduced energy consumption and material waste.<\/p>
The complete process chain will be demonstrated and validated at TRL 7 through three industrial demonstrators in the safety, space and aerospace sectors: a fire-protective helmet, two space landing gear structures and an aeroplane service port. Digital technologies, including sensors and a Digital Product Passport, will support traceability, quality monitoring and the integration of recycled titanium into industrial value chains.<\/p>
By replacing conventional fossil-fuel-intensive and heat-driven processes with electrically and mechanically driven alternatives, EMPowerMet aims to significantly reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, material losses, water and chemical use, while increasing resource efficiency and the competitiveness and resilience of European industry.
