The lack of metallic alloys tailored to the metallurgical conditions of laser-based additive manufacturing is still a critical bottleneck for this disruptive manufacturing technology. A new aluminium alloy- Aheadd® CP1, was developed which is specifically designed to exploit the rapid solidification nature of laser powder bed fusion. Two high-resolution synchrotron phase-contrast nano-tomography methods, namely Holographic X-ray Computed Tomography and Near-Field Ptychographic X-ray Computed Tomography, were used for the 3D investigations of the alloy reaching actual spatial resolutions below 20nm. We will present insights that elucidate the intra- and inter- granular structures, which are specific to this alloy and which contribute to the performance of the alloy for LPBF applications.
