Optimal iron nutrition is essential for fetal development, with iron being transferred from mother to fetus via the placental barrier. Iron deficiency can lead to neurodevelopmental problems, but the exact mechanisms of placental iron metabolism are not fully understood. This preliminary study examines term placental tissue using metal-conjugated antibodies for cellular phenotyping. Iron imaging, along with key proteins such as ferritin and transferrin, is discussed.
