Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as solid gel doped with non-natural biopolymers, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) biopolymer, has been investigated for its use as the electrolyte in zinc-air batteries (ZABs). The developed CMC:PAA and CMC:PVA (1:2) ex-situ gels show both good mechanical stability, i.e., no liquefaction, self-healing properties, and high liquid electrolyte uptake and retention. The ionic conductivity of CMC:PAA (1:2) ex-situ gel reached a high value of 0.231 S cm¯1 at room temperature. The electrochemical tests show high Zn utilization of 78% during galvanostatic discharge at high current density (5 mA cm¯2) with an energy density of 443.19 Wh kg¯1.
