The infections related to the application of medical devices for the treatment of patients are a major group of healthcare-associated infections (HAI). As a conventional medicine, antibiotics have been preferred for treatments. However, in some cases, they may not be effective due to the limited access of medicine in the affected area, the potential resistance of pathogens to the antibiotic, and the possible side effects. Alternatively, drug carrier systems can be used to carry, release, and localize the antimicrobial agents in the affected area without causing toxicity or systemic side effects. The porous structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) makes them a suitable candidate for incorporation, carry, and release of antibacterial drugs. For instance, ZIF-8 can inherently serve as an active antibacterial agent through the release of Zn ions. In this study, ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP), a natural product of bees with antibacterial properties, was incorporated into the ZIF-8 structure. The findings support the application of ZIF-8 as an appropriate and biocompatible tool to carry, transport and release antibacterial agents in the targeted area in the treatments of infections.
