Novel approaches in the field of photovoltaics (PV), such as building or vehicle integration, as seen in Figure 1, require investigations of lightweight PV module concepts. Typical glass-free polymer-based frontsheet PV modules show insufficient resistance to impact, thermomechanical and static loads [1–4]. While a proposal of the European Chemical Agency (ECHAS) plans to regulate short-chain per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) from 2025, also fluoropolymers and fluoroelastomers are currently under scrutiny, which could influence the usage of Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene copolymer (ETFE) for lightweight PV modules. Thus, this research proposes and evaluates a different lightweight PV module concept using glass fibre-reinforced polymers (GFRP) based on epoxy composites as front material, which reduces weight by 44–74% compared to conventional glass-backsheet (BS) modules.
