In the first part of this presentation, recent developments of non-destructive 3D microstructural characterization techniques are summarized with focus on possibilities using laboratory X-rays. This will include the application of artificial intelligence methodologies to improve the quality of the microstructural mapping. In the second part, examples of recent 3D research are given. Focus will be on 3D studies leading to new understanding of recovery, recrystallization and grain growth in aluminum.
