The application of lightweight construction strategies is a promising approach in the development of modern vehicle structures. Increased requirements for sustainability and the reduction or neutrality of CO2 emissions of materials, manufacturing processes and final products have already today a massive impact. Materials made from renewable resources, such as wood and other lignocellulosic raw materials, are thus becoming more attractive compared to conventional lightweight materials. Developments based on long and short fibres are possible, as well as multi-layer moulded parts from veneers or strands and multi-material composites.
The presentation discusses benefits and challenges of using wood as material in vehicle manufacturing.
