Due to the inherent properties of the process, arc-based generative manufacturing offers the possibility, of specifically applying different material properties locally. One possibility to realize this is the use of different materials. Currently, the scientific community focusses four core topics regarding multi material approaches in WAAM. First, anisotropic behavior in the welding direction. In the literature it is shown that the integral component properties can be specifically adjusted in the welding direction. Secondly, it is discussed if the use of well plasticizable materials can be used to locally increase the material strength under cyclic loading with locally notched components. The third research focus deals with the influence of the production sequence on the local properties of surface layers in arc-based production. In particular, the integration of specific corrosion and wear protection properties. The fourth and largest field is the production of graded material systems for a wide range of applications. This work will provide an overview of the current state of research in these four research areas and build a bridge to possible industrial applications.
