Enhancement in fatigue resistance at low temperature strain-controlled fatigue of SS 316L: Assisted by martensitic transformation

In the present study, experimental investigation was conducted on the low cycle fatigue (LCF) behaviour of SS316L at room temperature (RT) and -80 ℃. Compressive mean stresses develop due to strain induced martensitic transformation which retards the fatigue crack growth resulting in increased fatigue life. The phase transformation was confirmed with the help of X-ray diffraction 2-theta analysis.
