Alloy development for powder-based additive manufacturing processes is time-consuming and costly. With the use of powder blends of milled and atomized ferroalloys and pure elements, alloys can be produced rapidly, flexibly and cost-effectively directly in the localized and transient melt metallurgical process, e.g. by means of LPBF, and thus preliminary tests and component-relevant investigations can already be performed. Previous investigations have shown that this process is suitable for the production of various alloys. The knowledge gained has been applied to low alloy high strength (HSLA) steels. The results of microstructure, density, hardness and tensile strength as well as post-processing for precipitation hardening are presented.
