It has been widely accepted that flash event, which occurs under threshold conditions of ambient temperature and electric field strength, can significantly accelerate high temperature mass transport in ceramics such as stabilized zirconia polycrystals. Superplastic flow in fine-grained zirconia ceramics is also effectively enhanced during flash event. In the present study, we have successfully revealed athermal effect of a flash event on the superplastic flow in zirconia ceramics by careful control of specimen current and consequent specimen temperature during flash event. The observed superplastic behaviors under the flash event and the origin of the athermal effects of the flash event on high temperature superplastic deformation will be discussed.
