An ultrashort pulse laser has been used to manufacture physical models of porous media from two optical glass plates. The models incorporate embedded fiber optic sensors that enable real-time measurement of local pressure in the micropatterns, providing valuable insight into microscopic events and processes occurring in pores, thereby helping to explain various phenomena associated with multiphase flow in subsurface systems such as depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs and saline aquifers.
