The Lightweighting Initiative, launched by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), emphasizes the significance of lightweighting technologies in promoting sustainability, resource efficiency, and industrial competitiveness. Lightweight materials and technologies are crucial for reducing CO2 emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and supporting the objectives of the European Green Deal.
Through this initiative, the BMWK drives innovation by providing research funding and facilitating collaborative networks among industry stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers. The German Lightweighting Strategy as one important element of the initiative, serves as a comprehensive roadmap that outlines key objectives, priorities, and actions for advancing lightweight construction across various sectors, including automotive, aerospace, construction, and electronics. This strategy aims to establish lightweighting as a transformative cross-industry technology, encouraging the development of innovative solutions that address environmental challenges while boosting economic resilience.
Furthermore, the BMWK actively participates in European initiatives, such as the European Lightweighting Network (ELN). The ELN aims to develop a common perspective on the potential of lightweighting in Europe. In its activities, the network focuses on the use of lightweight technologies to support the targets under the Green Deal. The Key objective of the ELN is the drawing up of a European Lightweighting Strategy. The ELN has recently drafted the White Paper “Lightweighting For Climate Action”, which is intended to serve as an initial spark for the development of a European lightweighting strategy.
