The increasing growth in the electrical vehicles (EV) sector has fueled demand for batteries. Due to its high energy density, the long life span and the low cobalt content lithium-ion Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) batteries are increasingly used in EVs. [1] Nevertheless, the existing recycling processes are not yet sufficient to recover all the materials of the batteries in high purity. [2] In addition, waste can be generated at the end-of-life of batteries and as production waste. So far, it is unclear whether different recycling strategies are needed. In this work, an electrochemical approach is used to recover metals and metal compounds from unused (i.e. production waste) and cyclized (i.e. end-of-life) cathode material and then the results are compared. For the process, a novel drum electrode setup has been developed and tested.
