The analysis of cathode and anode materials by liquid based Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) methods require digestion of the materials, followed by sample preparation. In this work, we developed automation platforms that will handle the sample preparation after digestion. For the analysis of cathode materials made up of high concentrations of Li, Ni, Mn, and Co, an automated method for inline standard addition was developed to avoid matrix effects and provide accurate results. For anode materials made up of graphite or silicon-based materials, inline standard addition is not required and simpler calibration strategies are employed. Here we will present to different methods for the analysis of cathode and anode materials in combination with an Avio 500 ICP. The results show that the use of automated standard addition provides more accurate determinations for the major elements in cathode materials but also provides better accuracy for trace contaminants such as Na and Zr. External calibration, manual standard addition, and automated standard addition are compared as part of the cathode analysis comparison.
