Experimental materials scientists employ a large number of instruments, analysis tools, sample- and data-processing workflows and employ a data management infrastructure that ranges from paper, via mobile storage to digital archives. Hence, it is difficult to create a fixed one-size-fits-all training curriculum for the digitalization of such experimental research process. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel training format: a two-session training geared towards the specific needs of experimental materials scientists. The first session identifies the daily pain points that the technicians, doctoral students, staff scientists, and professors feel each day. The pain points are collected in multiple rounds of self-evaluation with increasing levels of complexity, moderated by the trainers. The second session then answers selected questions and provides tailored teaching for the participants, based on the identified pain points. In this presentation, we will show in detail the training concept as well as the outcomes and feedback from the first training event. We will close by giving an outlook on future adaptations of the training format for the benefit of the materials science community.
