In relation to climate change, many steelmaking companies have transitioned from traditional blast furnace methods to eco-friendly processes to achieve net-zero emissions. In line with this trend, Hyundai Steel announced a roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This roadmap consists of a mid-term plan until 2030 and a long-term plan from 2030 to 2050. The primary strategy of the mid-term plan is reducing carbon footprints through the electric arc furnace combined with blast furnace processes in two phases. The first phase utilizes the existing electric arc furnace for pre-melting low-carbon molten steel, subsequently mixing it into a basic oxygen furnace. The second phase is to design and construct Hyundai Steel's own unique new electric arc furnace. In this study, as part of the first phase, low-carbon steel sheets for automotive outer panels were test-produced using a combined process and compared with products from the traditional blast furnace process.
