Characterizing biomaterials like bone implants is crucial for understanding their interaction with biological tissues. Multimodal imaging techniques, particularly when used together, provide valuable insights. Synchrotron radiation-based micro-computed tomography (µCT) delivers detailed 3D structural analysis and non-invasive volumetric imaging, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provides high-resolution surface morphology.
However, these methods lack biological specificity. Histology remains the gold standard for analyzing tissue, showing degradation patterns and bone growth, but is time-consuming and requires sample sectioning. Sample preparation and image registration for correlative imaging continue to pose challenges.
