A domain ontology designed to model the common aspects across different characterisation methodologies is presented. This ontology, called the CHAMEO ontology, is based on the widely agreed Characterization Data (CHADA) documentation scheme (CEN Workshop Agreement CWA 17815). Its goal is to provide a common representation framework that can be applied across different types of characterisation, capturing methodologies and characterisation experiments including complex multi-technique cases. It can form the basis for interoperability, improved exchange of methods between laboratories and harmonisation of characterisation protocols. This work executes on the objectives of the European Materials Characterisation Council and the European Materials Modeling Council. In particular, the CHAMEO ontology is developed within the framework of the Elementary Multiperspective Material Ontology (EMMO). The CHAMEO ontology has been developed within the NanoMECommons project that has the goal of harmonizing characterisation protocols.
This work received funding from the European Commission via the Horizon 2020 projects “NanoMECommons (Grant Agreement n. 952869) and “Oyster (Grant Agreement n. 760827).
