Starting from sodium silicate, we use different methods to produce hierarchically porous structures with macro-and microporosity from the millimetre to the micrometre length scale. The products showed promising mechanical properties and bioactivity, making them attractive for biomedical applications. Furthermore, the proposed strategy is simple, fast and cost-effective, therefore has great potential for large-scale industrial production and fosters manufacturing of various materials with structural hierarchy.
