The paper presents results from the DigiConCyc cooperative R&D project. The major objective of the project is to develop an innovative manufacturing technology for modular, energy-efficient lightweight buildings on a modular basis with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions including a highly scalable production and operation of the lightweight buildings to be developed. The purpose is to develop a technological solution for the industrial mass production of individual lightweight buildings on a modular basis (s. Figure 1), including the development of automated manufacturing processes for the assembly  of complete room modules using robot-assisted CAD-CAM technologies and the consideration of the automated laying and join up of electrical and electronic devices as well as the HVAC solutions for energy-efficient air conditioning of the buildings in accordance with user-specific requirements.
The market demand for serial modular buildings is derived from the calculations of the construction experts from the management consultancy McKinsey. According to these calculations, housing companies will increasingly opt for modular construction in the near and distant future [1]. Furthermore, a study based on quantitative surveys, found that architects in particular will favour modular and serial construction over traditional construction methods in the future [2].
