Have you ever experienced challenges in replicating frictional behavior in tribological experiments? This study will demonstrate, through the minimized and controlled waviness profile and misalignment-induced oscillation, the inherent impossibility of achieving perfect reproducibility in frictional behavior. Using a pin-on-disk tribometer, we meticulously managed the variables of disk waviness profile and misalignment. To control the disk waviness profile, stringent standards were taken to ensure that the height variation across the 132 mm sliding track was maintained below 2 μm. Furthermore, to minimize oscillation resulting from misalignment, we ensured that the height differential post-mounting did not exceed 4 μm over the sliding track. Our findings highlight that even minor differences in surface profile and misalignment significantly influence the experimental results. We discovered a complex interplay between surface characteristics and system properties, which collectively exhibit a strong correlation with frictional behavior and can predict areas of maximum friction.
