Microspherical hydrochar is produced by hydrothermal carbonization of saccharides and can be post-carbonized by pyrolysis to enhance the electrochemical properties. A temperature-resolved study of the chemical and morphological evolution of sucrose-derived hydrochar during pyrolysis is presented. All aspects of the structural transition from an amorphous to a nano-crystalline structure are examined.
