To promote bone recovery after a fracture, the bone fragments are stabilized with metal plates, which in turn are fixed with metal screws. The infection probability after the implementation of an endoprosthesis is between 0.25 and 3 %, while the incorporation of osteosynthesis materials results in an even much higher risk, viz. between 5 and 10 %. An ideal material for endoprosthesis and osteosynthesis would be one that emits UV-C radiation (200-280 nm) under X-ray or gamma ray absorption, thus enabling localized disinfection or germ inactivation. This presentation will introduce the idea of UV-C emitting ceramic osteosynthesis materials achieved by rare-earth-doped inorganic compounds.
