Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) is the most successful additive for lubricants against wear. However, the use of ZDDP has been limited due to environmental sustainability. In this study, Laser surface texturing (LST) has been used to reduce the usage of ZDDP testing with thrust rolling bearings. Dimples and Cross patterns were created on the surface of the bearing washers on a micrometer scale. LST has been proven to improve the tribological performances of machine components, and the present results show a reduction of wear loss, which is by two orders of magnitude compared to the reference. The combined use of LST and ZDDP decreases the minimum concentration of ZDDP for tribofilm formation. The textured patterns not only retain lubricant in the contact area but also enhance the formation of antiwear ZDDP tribofilm. Finally, the characterization of the tribofilm was made by Raman spectroscopy. The spectrum of the tribofilm presents peaks related to Fe-S, Zn-S, and phosphates.
