As part of the digitalisation of product development processes, various software-tools have recently emerged to support these. Currently, those focus on tasks in later phases of product development, as can be seen from commercial CAD and FEM software, the determination or management of requirements, or on supporting the collaboration between engineers. Hence, existing software-tools focus on just a few of the tasks in the product development process. Thus, the remaining process steps show a potential of being supported with software-tools as they are not supported yet, with a few exceptions. That is even more important since these steps are of fundamental importance for the quality of the products.Therefore, in this contribution, a software-tool is developed to support the central step of subdivision into feasible modules in product development.
The aim of this software is to take up common methods of modularisation and let the software carry out the tasks that are not cognitive demanding. That is done, in order to reduce the development time and give the developer the opportunity to focus on the relevant steps of this method step. This is achieved by modeling the functional structure of the product within the software, collecting the necessary data for the implemented methods and developing an initial design of the modules present in the product. This software-generated design is then presented to the user, in which possible weaknesses are already highlighted. The user can then compile their own design in the software and receive real-time feedback on its quality. This feedback is created by comparing the software-generated design and the users design and highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of both designs. This ensures that the scope and implications of the users decisions can be recognised at an early stage, thus reducing development time and increasing the quality of the developed products.
