Effect of strain path martensitic transformation sequence in medium Mn steels

In the present work, we have investigated the effect of strain path on deformation-induced martensite transformation in medium Mn steels. The samples deformed under a uniaxial strain path showed complete austenite to martensite transformation, whereas samples deformed under plane strain conditions showed partial martensitic transformation. The intermediate ε martensite phase was observed in uniaxially deformed, while samples deformed under plane strain loading did not show any ε martensite. ε-martensite is known to facilitate α՛ nucleation and hence resulted in complete γ-α՛ transformation in uniaxially deformed samples. This difference in transformation behavior is explained on the basis of resolved shear stress calculations.
