In the 5d iridates the competition of strong spin orbit coupling and electron correlation, which facilitates the emergence of novel quantum states, strongly depends on crystal structure. A proximity induced ferromagnetic state  was observed in perovskite SrIrO3/LaCoO3 (SIO/LCO) bilayer thin films, which in the bulk orthorhombic SrIrO3 shows no magnetic ordering. Charge transfer of electrons from SIO to LCO is strongly suggested by Hall measurements. Atomically resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) has confirmed the charge transfer at the interface by analyzing the Co valence states depending on the distance to SIO/LCO interface.
