We present the Open Innovation Environment (OIE) - a web-based application that enables sharing and exchanging of semantic, ontology-based, information across members of the European materials science community. OIE stems from the European project OYSTER and is currently being further developed in the follow-up project NanoMECommons. In OYSTER, the notion of CHADA (characterization data) has been introduced for describing and documenting mechanical experiments. In OIE, users can register knowledge items of types of organizations, experts and CHADA; annotate them using keywords coming from ontologies; and link them with each other to create network of resources. In NanoMECommons, the notion of iCHADA is being developed, which aims to digitalize the CHADA format by representing it via the EMMO ontology.
