Conventional lab-scale electrolysis was initially performed with methane sulphonic acid as an environmental-friendly electrolyte to analyze the system. This paper presents two methods, which involve an electrochemical process for recovering metals from NMC111 cathodes.1. Direct electrolysis using a rotating drum electrode 2. Chemical leaching using rotating drum and following it up with metal coating. The objective is to extract the metal oxides and recover metals separately by varying the potential difference given to the system. Furthermore, the oxidation of the metals at the other electrode and the formation of oxides could also be investigated, when a two-cell system was used with a salt bridge as ionic connector. Moreover, the efficiency of the two processes was determined after detailed characterization for fresh cathode material and cycled electrode material after 4,000 cycles extracted from a 20 Ah cell.
