Clinical laboratories are tasked with monitoring patient samples for exposure to harmful elements and reporting these values to health care officials. In the case for high levels of As or Hg, additional methods are required to determine the species so medical doctors can recommend the best course of action for the patient. Mercury speciation has been one of the more challenging methods for laboratories to provide because it involves isotope dilution GC-ICP-MS. Here we present a novel method for determining Hg species in blood without the need for gas chromatography. This method includes inline sample preparation for filtering blood samples prior to injection onto a C8 or C18 column. In addition, post-column hydride generation is performed after the column separation which leads to improved detection limits that are on par with GC-ICP-MS methods.
