Material-based lightweight construction using magnesium offers significant potential for energy savings in the operation of vehicles and aircraft. While cast components made from magnesium alloys are state of the art, wrought products still represent a niche application. However, extruded products offer great potential for weight reduction and are therefore indispensable in efficient component design. Mg-Ca-Al-Mn alloys are very promising for such applications, as they have good mechanical properties while processing is straightforward since no heat treatments are required. Furthermore, the alloys can be considered economically and ecologically friendly, as only abundant raw materials are used and recyclability is assured. In our work, extrusion at moderate temperatures is used to process a variety of Mg-Ca-Al-Mn alloys, resulting in profiles showing a bi-modal grain structure and good tensile properties. The microstructure as well as mechanical properties are provided, and the results are discussed in a broad context.
