Making the development of materials ‘digital’ requires bringing together multiple sources of information from experiments, processes and simulations. In particular, increasingly complex computational workflows need to be managed and deployed efficiently to make their results available for decisions by the end user. The OntoTrans project addresses these integration and interoperability challenges with an open translation environment (OTE). The OTE connects materials and manufacturing problems (so-called Innovation Cases) to potential solutions and relevant data sources. In particular, the OTE formalizes the Innovation Case by representing all relevant objects, processes, data, properties, etc., in an ontology in the Elementary Multiperspective Material Ontology (EMMO) framework. This system enables users to explore available knowledge (including data and models) and potential knowledge sources through a recommendation system based on artificial intelligence. The OntoTrans OTE, including its software architecture, will be presented and demonstrated in selected use cases.

The OntoTrans project has received funding from the European Union‘s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 862136.
