The concept of metamaterials is related to the high-resolution additive manufacturing of volume filling filigree structures, not only for saving material in light weight design but also for tailoring completely new material properties. Advanced ceramics are especially well suited for this approach due to their extreme physicochemical properties, guaranteeing thermodynamic stability and high durability even at large surface areas and finest feature sizes. Filigree structures can be manufactured via two-photon-polymerization (2PP) operating in the regime of non-linear light absorption. For the first time it is possible to generate ceramic structures with a feature size smaller than the critical defect size of advanced structural ceramics and thus, tailoring of advanced properties comes along already with the shaping process. This strategy, however, crucially requires transparent resins, which is a diametrical demand brought upon usually fully opaque ceramic resins and slurries.
