The Materials-Open-Lab (MatOLab) project, as a joint venture between the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) and the Fraunhofer group MATERIALS, stands for the digitization of materials, parts, and components along their entire life cycle. As the project is closely related to the Platform MaterialDigital (PMD), we share the same vision and interact openly. The project aims for concrete, practical and applicable solutions with pilot cases centered on specific materials developed and provided for public use. One of the main challenges is enabling compatibility and interoperability, considering the diversity of characterization methods in materials science. To address this, we aim to create a knowledge representation with in-depth information about the method and semantically transform the data according to FAIR principles.
Our approach enables the user to retrieve data based on the desired context and interact with prediction models using semantically enriched data to gain further knowledge, for example, the performance indicators of the alloy in scope. To show the benefits of such an approach, we developed a web application to explore a knowledge base with material characterization data of aluminum alloys. The tool chain for data transformation, its open-source components, and the current state of implementation will also be presented.
