Despite of the high specific capacity, Ni-rich layered NMC oxides (LiNixMnyCozO2) suffer from high surface reactivity and structural degradation during (de)lithiation. The coating of the cathode active materials plays an important role in improving cell performance to suppress reactions between the cathode material and the electrolyte. Herein, the single crystal (SC) Ni-rich NMC material was coated with LiNbO3 by a new H2O2-activated wet coating process. The obtained NMC products were investigated by various characterization methods. It was shown that the thermal treatment can influence the crystallinity and properties of the Nb-coating on the NMC surface greatly and have to be carefully and individually selected. Very homogeneous and stable coating layers can be formed on particle surface in a certain calcination temperature range.
