Early aerospace practice to use aluminium foil to protect composite structures against lightning strike, was replaced this century by copper foil, embedded in the outermost layer of modern aircraft structural CFRP laminates. Performance and recyclability of ever larger content of CFRP in the most recent airliners, are opening opportunities to explore metal free solutions to LSP of CFRP structures. This talk will illustrate the progress that has been made at Airbus in this field of knowledge.
