The Superpore-X project aims to develop new materials and technologies for gas
turbine seals using functionally graded porous Hastelloy-X (H-X) alloys. The
project's vision is to improve the performance and lifetime of these materials
compared to existing honeycomb seals. The main hypothesis is that the hightemperature performance of the new porous sealing materials can be enhanced
through a powder-metallurgy-based fabrication approach. This approach offers
flexibility in controlling pore size and distribution, including the ability to create
porous functionally graded materials. Additionally, the proposed method utilizes
readily available, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly substances as
porosity forming agents (“space holders”). The primary scientific goal is to
establish a relationship between the fabrication process, structure, and properties
of porous H-X alloys by conducting experimental studies on the fundamental
phenomena governing the formation of the porous structure.
