In this work, high-pressure torsion (HPT) was used to fabricate self-lubricated metal matrix composites. In this process, different quantities of solid lubricant materials (e.g. graphite and MoS2) were reincorporated in Inconel718 (a Ni-based superalloy). The aim is to find a suitable quantity of solid lubricant and appropriate process parameters to achieve the best combination of mechanical and tribological properties.
After HPT deformation, an improvement in the graphite distribution and agglomerate size was observed in the Inconel718 composites. Furthermore, increased hardness and very high values of tensile strength were obtained, especially for the composite with 0.25wt% graphite.
