Metal matrix composites are gaining increasing interest due to the numerous possibilities to modify the mechanical properties in particular. A combination with hard ceramic particles can lead to higher hardness, strength and also increased thermal stability. Aluminium matrix composites (AMC) with a high proportion of SiC particles are considered as an alternative material for brake discs, as they can exhibit similar wear properties to grey cast iron, with extra benefit of enormous weight savings and lower environmental emissions. By generating a protective layer on the AMC surface as a result of tribocontact with conventional brake pad material, progressive wear of the AMC base body is minimised and can be avoided in a pin-on-disc test. This poster offers insights into analysis and evaluation of the tribosystem: AMC and brake pad material. It also provides information on how the formation of a tribological layer can be influenced, whether by varying test parameters or by preparation of the AMC surface.
