Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTP) have features of heating-melting and cooling-solidifying, and are superior in productivity, impact resistance, secondary processing and reusability. However, it is extremely difficult to impregnate the polymer into fiber bundles during CFRTP fabrication since thermoplastics generally have a high melt-viscosity after the polymerization process. Thus, prepreg sheets that the fibers are impregnated with thermoplastic beforehand are used, but the advanced impregnation technology during manufacturing the sheet and high temperature and pressure during secondary forming are needed. Therefore, the high-quality semipreg sheet with excellent cost performance has been developed as an alternative to the CFRTP prepreg sheet and is expected to provide the same impregnation and mechanical properties as the prepreg sheet. Semipreg sheets have excellent flexibility due to the polymer powder fixated on the carbon fibers and are capable of low-pressure forming due to the impregnation of the polymer during the secondary forming process. However, it is necessary to investigate the impregnation mechanism of how melted polymer flows between carbon fibers, evaluation of mechanical properties and development of mass producible molding methods and suitable applications. In this study, using the apparatus that enables press-impregnate by non-contact heating and electrical heating and vacuum-decompression impregnate by non-contact heating, and it is investigated the fixation state and impregnation behavior of CFRTP semipreg sheets. In addition, CF/PPS and CF/PEI laminates were fabricated by heated-press molding using semipreg sheets to which PPS polymer and PEI polymer were fixated on spread carbon fibers, and their strength was evaluated by three-point bending test. The polymer interlayer of the CF/PPS and CF/PEI laminate was observed and the impregnation behavior and flowability of each polymer were quantitatively evaluated.
