We have tested performance of an electron microprobe equipped with SXES to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize thin DLC coatings doped with various metals as well as to determine chemical state of C in such coatings. Various metals were added in order to change sp2/sp3 bonding ratio and thus hardness and elasticity of the films widely used as hard protection of various medical devices including orthopaedic and cardiovascular.
