POLYMERS FROM SUSTAINABLE RAW MATERIALS
Forests are undoubtedly the more efficient CO2 capture system.
The simultaneous de-polymerization of Lignin and Celluloses opens the door for a large number of Organic Building Blocks from which sustainable monomers are to be produced.
Unfortunately, over 90 % of the Industrial Polymers are produced using petrochemical monomers, with a clear non-renewable source, and with a doubtful sustainability, and this has to be reversed in the future.
A new catalytic process of simultaneous de-polymerization of lignin and Cellulose in liquid phase and at moderate temperature, was developed for forest and garden residues as well as for agro-industrial wastes. Contrary to Gasification and Pyrolysis processes this new process allows for the recovery of the sugars and Glycosides, as  well as rather small organic structures from which some important monomers can be produced.
In a development stage a Depolymerization Pilot Plant was built, with a nominal capacity of 3 ton per day of liquified wood, with a smaller liquid-liquid extraction unit for the separation of the water soluble sugars and glycosides.
Possible pathways  to sustainable  industrial polymers production, will be presented and discussed.
