For parts made by injection moulding, prototype moulds are needed to fully prove a concept. Additive manufacturing (AM) seems to by an alternative for first conceptual tests, but for functional testing for example heat resistance or strength tests, original processes and materials are necessary. Therefore, reducing time and costs during prototype production is the main goal to verify the sustainability. Additive manufacturing for moulds could be a way to quickly get first injection moulded parts. Especially polymer based additive manufacturing seems to be suitable for this application due to short processing times, end-use quality and lower costs compared to metal-based AM or conventional prototype moulds. In this presentation, different additive manufacturing technologies and especially materials are used in various trail-and-error case studies to find the right process and material for injection moulding. In the end the current state of the art is presented to quantify the possible number of parts.
