An automated defect size assessment method based on image processing techniques is presented. Furthermore, the used criteria is validated through 3D renderings of sample materials. The casting simulation software offers a prediction of the areas most prone to porosity formation as a function of thermodynamic data. The approach described here can be adopted as a method for characterizing pore networks.
